Common questions about oncology nursing coaching, insurance coverage for RN services in BC, the Medicine of the Person philosophy, and how we collaborate with BC Cancer teams.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is "Medicine of the Person"?

The term was pioneered by Swiss physician Dr. Paul Tournier. He championed the idea that while technical medicine is vital, it must never overshadow the individual’s unique story, values, and spiritual life.

"There are two things which we must always keep together: the science of medicine and the art of the person."

— Dr. Paul Tournier

At Present Help, this means we prioritize the relationship. You are a person to be known, not a "case" to be managed. We address the intersection of physical symptoms, emotional health, and spiritual peace.

What is the difference between your Nursing and Coaching services?

We offer two distinct pathways of support led by a Registered Nurse:

  • Regulated Nursing: Focuses on clinical safety, symptom monitoring using validated tools (like ESAS-R), and technical education for chemo/immuno home care.
  • Cancer Coaching: Focuses on health navigation, decision support, and medical advocacy to help you communicate effectively with your medical team.

Do you use standardized clinical tools?

Yes. We utilize Evidence-Based tools such as the Edmonton Symptom Assessment System (ESAS-R) and Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs). These are the same gold-standard assessment tools used by BC Cancer to track symptom trends and ensure clinical safety.

Are your services covered by insurance?

While not covered by MSP, many Extended Health Care plans in Canada cover "Registered Nursing" services. Since I am a BCCNM Registered Nurse, my invoices can be submitted for reimbursement under most plans that include private nursing. We recommend confirming your specific coverage with your provider.

Why must I be physically located in British Columbia?

As a BCCNM Registered Nurse, my license and professional liability protection are tied to the provincial regulations of British Columbia. To ensure the highest standard of safety and to maintain seamless coordination with your BC Cancer medical team, I only provide services (both Nursing and Coaching) to clients who are physically located within BC.

Do you provide emergency medical care?

No. Present Help is a supportive and educational nursing practice. We do not provide acute crisis intervention or emergency services. If you are experiencing an emergency (such as chest pain or severe shortness of breath), you must call 911 or visit your nearest emergency department immediately.
